Author Laura Detering
Laura Detering is the Indie B.R.A.G medalion honoree Author of the The Witch in the Envelope trilogy. She used to spend her days teaching social sciences and dance to high schoolers. She also used to scan patients’ hearts and vascular systems as an echocardiographer. Now she writes full time. Laura lives in what she considers a little paradise in northeast Florida. She’s married to her college sweetheart and is a mom to two amazing girls. When she is not managing her chronic illnesses, she loves to go on walks, attend book club, lead worship, crochet, craft, listen to audiobooks, help others write, do jigsaw puzzles, and play board and card games.
Answers to some of the most common questions Laura is asked
What inspired you to write The Witch in the Envelope (TWITE)?
I had a recurring dream when I was a little girl. I would have this same dream roughly four to five times a year over a few years. I even named it, as you can probably guess, The Witch in the Envelope. TWITE the book is a little more of a grown-up version of the dream, but the true essence remains.
How long did it take you to write The Witch in the Envelope (TWITE)?
I was completely naive when I started this writing journey. That helped me because I had no other voice except my inner critic to compete with. From October 2016 to the beginning of December 2016, I planned and outlined TWITE. I took some time off for the holidays (and let’s be real, I was scared! Writing an entire book can be a daunting task). About mid-February, I finally put on my big girl panties and just went for it. I finished my zero draft in April 2017 with TWITE around 90,000 words. Editing it was a whole different beast so I won’t get into all that.
What is your love language?
My primary love language is Acts of Service. My secondary love language is Quality Time.
Have you always wanted to be an author?
The short answer, yes. The full answer is a bit more complicated. The truth is, I never felt myself capable. Authors to me were these mythical beings who transported you into a new world. In the land of time before social media, you were lucky if you got to see a little black and white photo of an author on the dust jacket somewhere. What appealed to me was that, unlike an actor, writers got to come in your homes every day and yet, they maintained their anonymity.
As a former high school teacher, I was always encouraging my students to reach for their dreams and pursue their passions, no matter what obstacles they faced. And my goodness did these students face many obstacles. I faced them too, everyone does, but I didn’t think myself good enough or worthy enough for such a blessing (a characteristic you may see in one of my MCs). I was never a gifted writer in the grammar department so, I put off telling my stories for many, many years, convincing myself that it would always just stay a dream.
But God. One day I felt an overwhelming push to just start writing and that time was running short to tell my story (more on that later). Here I am today finally taking the advice I gave to others over and over again.
